This is a little embarassing... but here goes....
I studied French for 4 years in high school and I was lucky enough to be admitted to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2001 out of high school and I majored in Russian/French for 2 years.
Was stupid enough to get bagged for frat and ended up moving back home to study at Georgia Tech. That got me kicked off the Track & Field Team, lost my scholarship, and I decided, "I'm going to wander around Argentina for a few months." There I learned Spanish through my Russian girlfriend, and I ended up staying off and on for about a year.
Now I'm ready to get back in the service and unfortunately my USAF recruiter told me that I may not be able to get the secret clearance as a cryptolinguist because.... let's just say I partied too hard at Georgia Tech (with all that new found freedom) and got busted on campus for smoking some pot.
I noticed that the Marines have plenty of linguists positions that don't require the security clearance, so I'm meeting with a USMC recruiter on Monday.
My question is, with the desperate need for linguist (especially in Pashto and Arabic), do you think this my little experimentation in college would really DQ my clearance in the Air Force? I'd hate to be halfway through basic or something and find out that I didn't get my clearance and end up pushing papers or something for the remainder of my contract when I could just go to the Marines and head to Monterrey,CA.
True Marines are in the suck more and the enlistment bonus is way smaller than the Air Force, but as you can tell by the background I provided I'm a linguist at heart. I truly regret my mistakes and I'm ready to move forward. My plan is to join the Marines as a linguist and hopefully after 4-5 years of honorable service to the Corps I might be able to qual for the clearance and re-enlist as a cryptolinguist in the Air Force. If anyone has any input or any suggestions as to how I might be able to accomplish my end-goal (Air Force cryptolinguist) given my history, I would greatly appreciate it.
Respectfully,
M.C.

P.S. ~ I figured if I can't get a square deal either way, I'll head off to the French Foreign Legion, maybe I'll pick up some Arabic in Djibouti. (Half kidding, but half not)

Your question would be better placed somewhere like military.com.
The UK MoD Vetting Agency have perhaps a slightly different line on certain standards and values than our US counterparts. In fact the perspective is so doifferent, you would certainly get a misleading answer from this side of the pond.
Two issues you have raised over here would probably be put down to strenght of personality, and youthful immaturity. After all it is not unheard of even for the President to be accused of having the odd drag himself?
( Not like anyone was ever penalised for Frat Bagging in Block 6A?)

I thought it was positively encouraged! Unfortunately, I was more often than not involved in FAT Bagging.

s*** hot analytical skills you got there mate. I've worked with the USMC (have I mentioned that before anyone?) I am sure they do require a basic level of analysis in their G2 cell............

And I have been known to get it on with the odd WOs/Officer's daughter in the past, so that would no doubt be Brat Fagging!
